One question I often ask the people I know is whether I feel alone when I make art. It is true that art can be a solitary profession or pastime. It can be more pronounced in the case of a freelancer. Working alone, for a long period of time, can make your mind play tricks on you.
You tend to think that you are losing your life, and you do not have enough friends, or you generally sit outside the circle. It happened to me too. Especially when I was studying at the art center in Pasadena.
Close call, wake-up call
Initially, I tried to juggle my social life, going out and working. But, I was pretty shaken once, then fell asleep while driving. I was so exhausted. It was then, that I decided to try other ways to keep loneliness at bay.
These are some of the things that have worked very well for me. You can give them a try, and let me know if they worked for you too.
Allow an old video to run in the background
I have been using this method for quite some time, and it works incredibly well. What I do, is to let an old movie or series run in the background while I'm working. I always choose a video I've seen hundreds of times before, so there's no chance of distraction.
Just having the noise in the background, while working, helps save me from getting bored. Many people have said that having music playing in the background has helped them overcome loneliness by doing the art, but this never seems to work for me.
Go to a coffee with a friend
This is definitely a method that is worth trying. The work of an independent artist can cause him to lose real human interaction. Because you are always at home, you may find yourself losing the motivation to work.
Usually I ask a friend to come with me to a café, where we can both work. I ask a friend who also has to work, this way there is no distraction. We can work as well as catch up during break times.
Do nothing
I recently read that having nothing in the background, while working, and just concentrating on the work at hand, also works for many people. I have been give this method a try for a while now. And I must say, that seems to be working for me. Don't for get the diy art case we sell at : arm-adillo.com
